wood cabinet

Getting Started

Recently I custom built this cherry tv wood stand cabinet for a customer. The customer gave me some reference material, and I got to work on a scale drawing. With a bit of back and forth we hammered out all the details. Once I got approval to go ahead I picked up the material from Commonwealth Plywood in North Bay so I could get to work!

The Dust Flies

It’s challenging to break down large sheets of material in such a small shop, but I’ve got a good system using straight edges and a circular saw. I then resaw to more accurate sizes with cleaner edges on the table saw. The solid cherry wood was milled up next, resawn and dimensioned. No elaborate joinery, just dadoes and biscuits, but there’s still lots of planning and precision involved.

I realized halfway through the project that the holes for wires that the customer requested would leave particle board exposed on the back. I offered, free of charge, to make solid cherry grommets for those holes which ended up being quite tricky. See the process here:

Finishing Up

Once everything was glued and and sanded, I applied a few coats of Osmo Satin Poly-x hard wax oil to the cherry wood cabinet and, wow, did the grain ever pop! There’s something to be said about using naturally beautiful woods like cherry. I let the piece cure and delivered it early the next week to a happy customer. Here’s a longer video showing the process. There are over 20 hours of work condensed to 15 minutes.

Making wood cabinets like this is a delight, and I’m happy to work with customers to create projects that meet their needs, taste and budget.
